I Went Back To Check On My Favorite Tree

I Went Back To Check On My Favorite Tree

A few years ago, I wrote a post called "Letter Of Recommendation: My Favorite Tree," which became one of my most-read stories ever. I was thinking a few weeks ago that I hadn't been back to check on my favorite tree for quite a while. And as of last week, it's still fall in Missoula, and the larches have been changing, so I figured it was a perfect time to go have a look. I shot some video while I was there, and turned the original text of the post into a short YouTube film. Here it is—I hope it inspires you to think about your favorite tree, or pick a favorite tree if you don't have one already. (I'm also copying the original written post below the video.)

You Should Make Bad Art When I was a kid, I loved music, movies, art, and books. I read constantly. I listened to music all the time, and I watched movies every night I could. I thought musicians, authors, actors, and movie directors were heroes, and I thought it would be so cool to be one of them. But I was just a kid in a small town nowhere near New York or Hollywood, and nobody I knew was an artist or a writer or a rapper. Nobody told me this one thing about all those books and movies and...
